A worked example
€950 rent, €85 electricity and a €25 phone bill each month total €1,060 in regular monthly costs. €600 annual insurance adds a €50 monthly reserve. Together: €1,110 a month on average, or €13,320 a year.
How the calculation works
Which expenses belong in this list?
Include recurring expenses with predictable amounts: rent, utility instalments, insurance, memberships and subscriptions. Variable shopping and one-off purchases do not belong in this recurring list. If an instalment changes, you can enter your own estimate and update it later. This gives you a starting overview of commitments you can plan for regularly.
Put billing frequencies on the same basis
Monthly amounts are multiplied by 12, weekly amounts by 52 and daily amounts by 365. Annual, six-monthly, quarterly and two-monthly payments are multiplied by 1, 2, 4 and 6 to calculate their annual cost. Divide annual costs by 12 for the monthly average. Kalvo uses the same average-cost convention.
An average is different from a charge
The total is a planning figure. It is not the exact amount leaving your account each month. The reserve contribution shows the average cost of bills paid less often than monthly. Use the bill calendar for actual scheduled payment dates. This tool does not calculate income or your remaining spending budget.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include annual bills?
Yes. Select annual billing and enter the full yearly amount. Its monthly share is included in the total.
Why not multiply weekly costs by four?
This average uses 52 weeks per year. Four weeks per month would count only 48 weeks and underestimate annual costs.
What does the reserve contribution mean?
It is the monthly average of bills paid every two months or less often. Kalvo treats these entries as reserves.
Does the calculator save my list?
The list remains in your browser during this session. Download the CSV file and import it into Kalvo to keep maintaining it on your iPhone.
